What are Bio-identical Hormones?

Bio-identical hormones are derived from plant sources and have identical molecular structures to the hormones that your body produces. They are made in a lab, but are not foreign substances to the body because they are exactly the same as the hormones that your body produces.
Synthetic hormones are also made in a lab, but are foreign substances to the body because they are not identical to the hormones produced by your body.

How long until I see results using bio-identical hormones?

It usually takes about 3-4 weeks to start to notice the effects of the hormones.  Hormones work by altering the DNA (the genetic make-up) of the cell.  They bind to the receptor outside of the cell, go into cell and then into the nucleus (the brain of the cell).  Once in the nucleus, hormones bind to the DNA of the cell and alter the genetic make-up of the cell. 

How do I know if I qualify?

Lab results, clinical symptoms, and a history and physical will determine whether you qualify for treatment or not.  We will only treat a patient if treatment is a medical necessity.  Testosterone and other hormone levels begin to steadily decline as early as 30 years of age.  Most of our patients are older than 35 years of age, however, as mentioned earlier, lab results, clinical symptoms, and the history and physical performed by a Genesis physician will determine whether you qualify for treatment.

Do I need to stay on the hormone replacement therapy program forever?

No.  The numerous benefits that you will get from hormone replacement therapy are due to the optimization of hormone levels.  If you decide to stop the program, your hormone levels will return to where they were prior to starting treatment and you will feel the same way that you did prior to the hormone replacement therapy.  In order to maintain the benefits of the therapy, you must keep the hormone levels optimized by continuing the therapy.

Will you take over as my primary care physician?

No.  The physicians at Genesis Health Institute specialize in hormone replacement therapy.  We will communicate with your primary care physician (and any of your other doctors) as needed to make sure that you are getting the best health care available!  

Can Genesis Health Institute use blood work that I have already had done?

Genesis Health Institute can use your previous blood work if your lab results were within the last 6 months and include the lab tests that we require.  The labs that we require are very specific, as there are many important lab tests that we need.  We use these lab results in order to identify and treat the hormone deficiencies, in order to understand the cause of the hormone deficiencies and to monitor various factors to maximize your health and fitness goals and minimize side effects (i.e. cholesterol levels, liver function tests, kidney test, and many others).  

Does insurance cover the cost of the program?

It depends on the type of insurance that you have and your specific insurance plan.  In general, insurance will usually cover the routine labs which you are required to get every six months. 

PPO insurance - Usually covers the lab work with a Genesis lab script.  (You can download a Genesis lab script by going to “How to Get Started”. 

HMO insurance - You will need to take the lab script to your “in network” primary care physician for him/her to write the lab script for you in order to be covered by your insurance.  Your doctor simply needs to write a prescription for the lab tests located in the rectangular box on the Genesis lab script.  He will then send you to a lab which your insurance is affiliated with.

No insurance - Make sure to download the lab script which says no insurance (located in the “How to Get Started” section).  This lab script has less lab tests listed and will significantly reduce your out-of-pocket expense to about $300 to $400.

Insurance will usually pay for many of the medications as well (with possible co-pays).  If there are medications that are not covered by your insurance, Genesis Health Institute will order them through a compound pharmacy and they will be delivered directly to the patient’s house for our wholesale prices.  (These wholesale prices are often equivalent to or cheaper than the medication co-pays when going through the insurance companies.) The compound pharmacy medications are the same top quality medications that you would get from a commercial pharmacy.

The program fee is $995.00 every six months.  We do not bill the insurance directly for this fee, but we can give you an invoice for our services and you can submit the invoice to the insurance for possible reimbursement.
